I have used various Garmin products for the last 10 years on my boat. I have a one generation ago chartplotter and sonar unit from Garmin, the 4208. I looked at the Wi-fish because I wanted better resolution for structure and seeing fish and it looked like a cheaper way to get to the next generation of sonar while my GPS and charts are just fine. Here is what I found using it for 2 weeks everyday:Installation:Easy. You need to mount the supplied transducer with 3 screws and it does not seem to be to sensitive to mount position. Tip for the Raymarine product manager: the wires are too short unless you are just targeting the kayak market. I have a 19ft boat and to route them with the rest of my wires left me short. I made it work but it is not ideal. Second... again unless you are a kayak fisher it is unclear why you need this RAM mounted thing that does nothing but transmit WIFI and has no display. Shrink that thing down and make it a puck with and on/off button. Why would I mount a giant piece of plastic that does nothing on a RAM mount design to show displays on a boat where space is always a premium?Usage:The basics work well. I can only speak to the iPhone app. The app is somewhat buggy and anemic. It has a maps feature but when you are connected to the WIFISH it appears to not be working because it relies on map tiles over the internet. Seems like a feature that was not well thought out. I also experienced that when I tried to change the settings when connected to the WiFish with the app it frequently crashes. Tip to Raymarine product manager: The hardware works... where you will make this product awesome is investing in great software.I was please to see it working with my Navionics maps, although it was somewhat by accident that I figured that out... it just started working. I find this feature to be very compelling but hard to figure out and I suspect that many users fail to see it work.Frequently there were issues getting the application to work. The iPhone said it was connected but the application said it was "waiting for connection" that is frustrating when you are trying to fish.Lastly, it would be nice if you could set some targets to identify fish. On and iPhone 7 I found it hard to get a good view of what I thought were marks and I could really only use it for bottom contour and depth.Overall it has great potential but that will only be realized if the software steps up and makes it great. I would not buy this unless you were on a kayak with no other options as a primary fish finder. With the right features in the software it could be amazing and eliminating us having to spend a fortune on screens when we have one in our phone is a brilliant and good direction.DOES NOT WORK WITH NAVIONICS SOFTWAREMy goal was to have this work with an iPad and Navionics SonarChart live. All my initial research seemed to indicate that it would work, so I clicked away and ordered it.Once I received the product the first thing I had to do was update the firmware, because it was out of date and many people commented on that causing connection issues. Of course I didn’t have a miniSD card to do the update, so I had to get one of those. Once I updated the firmware I started testing the unit.As I mentioned my main objective was to have this work with Navionics charting software. I purchased Boating HD and try as I may I could never get it to work. I spent a total of about four hours watching videos, reading discussion boards and other reviews. The Boating HD software would show the Raymarine Wi-Fish device, but say it was disconnected. To verify if the unit was actually working I downloaded the Raymarine Wi-Fish mobile app. Connecting to the unit with their app seemed to be a bit unreliable and slow. Sometimes it would work right away, sometimes it would require a reboot of both the Wi-Fish unit and the iPad. Once it was connected it did seem to work. I never really pursued the device functionality beyond that, so I can’t comment on how well the actual sonar works. After about four hours of my time and much frustration I have given up.Just a few other comments. There are two hex keys that are needed that are not included (really?). I thought that was a bit cheesy. Also the transducer bracket feels cheap. I would probably look at coming up with something made out of metal. The Wi-Fish unit itself seems unnecessarily large for just being a simple wi-fi sending unit.In fairness to Raymarine I think some of my confusion about the compatibility of this product with Boating HD is due to Navionics misinformation. Although on the Raymarine site they are also sorta vague on this issue. I am disappointed about how much time I have wasted on this project.I decided to try the Dragonfly 7 Pro next. Hopefully that will give me all the functionality that I need. I will add a note on to this review if I have success with the Navionics software and the Dragonfly 7 Pro.This thing is awesome! It integrates with the Navionics app on my iPad (without any setup besides connecting to its wifi signal). It works better than my hummingbird, and I can mount it remotely so it doesn't take up any space in the pilot house. In Alaska, it is good for about 500-600 feet before it starts to lose signal. The picture is amazing, and I cannot express how cool it is that it automatically plots a more detailed chart on the bottom than the "stock" navionics maps (and the app saves this info for every time you are back in the same area). This thing is very cool, and was well worth the money. My only complaint was that the wiring was pretty short (not long enough to run from the stern to the wheel on my 18' skiff, but I soon realized that it doesn't need to be run all the way up to the front. It can be wired remotely. As soon as you apply power, it turns on automatically and everything connects without pushing any buttons. Another cool feature is that you can pull up the wifish app on your phone or iPad while it is running on more than one device, so passengers or kids can watch for fish or check the depth on their own phone without running up to the iPad at the front of the boat.I had to write a review in response to all those saying it doesn't work with the Navionics app. I'm sorry to say but I'm going to say it's probably user error. You must have the Wifish app installed and connected through wifi for the navionics app to work, if you uninstall Wifish navionics won't see it. I've been using this for years as my primary depth and nav solution and it works fine. My only reason I gave them 4 stars is the fact that it's Wifi only, come on Raymarine, for $10 you could put in a bluetooth option also. This way your tablet could use a phones wifi hotspot for music streaming and bluetooth for depth, navionics for chart.Product came very quick but doesn’t not preform like advertised. I bought it to connect to my Navionics app like advertised and it fails to connect after numerous atemps. It has no where near the adjustability of real sonar. I would not purchase this product again.Great so far!
